How it's calculated

  • The DMV is calculated under the Motor Vehicle Tax Act (ZDMV-1), which has applied since 1 January 2021. It is the sum of a part based on CO2 emissions and fuel type and a part based on the EURO emission standard. For a used car only a share is paid, depending on age: from 91% for a car up to one year old to 33% for a car older than ten years.
  • An NEDC figure is converted to WLTP with a factor of 1.22 for petrol and other fuels and 1.20 for diesel. If there's no CO2 figure, the law sets €2,247 for petrol and €2,695.50 for diesel.
  • A car with at least 7 seats besides the driver's pays 30% less. A fully electric car pays no DMV.
  • The law doesn't list EURO 6d-TEMP separately, so the calculator uses the higher EURO 6c amount and shows how much less it would be if FURS classes it as EURO 6d. A hybrid with a diesel engine is calculated on the diesel scale. In both cases, check the amount with FURS before you buy.
  • For VAT purposes a car is new if it has done no more than 6,000 km or no more than 6 months have passed since its first registration. For such a car 22% VAT is paid in Slovenia, and the base includes the DMV. For a used car bought by a private person, no VAT is paid in Slovenia.
  • This is an estimate for private buyers purchasing a car in an EU country. FURS sets the tax in a decision based on your DMV-N return.
